Rock Hard Felt De-Burring Pads and Blocks
High quality rock hard felt deburring pads are now available. Rock hard felt is a stropping media that is especially useful for
deburring as you move between one stone to the next in the lower end of
your grit progression. It will grab onto and remove problem burrs with
ease and makes a good stropping medium in its own right, with somewhat
different characteristics from leather, especially if loaded with
certain abrasives and works particularly well with diamond spray strop
abrasive.
I
have some that are appropriately sized for mounting on the back of DMT8 metal plates (8 x 3 x
1/8 inches), if desired, as well as some thicker and longer pads that are 12 x 3 x 1/4 inches thick that may fit other popular bases or can be used as is, i.e., unmounted.
Rock hard felt "deburring blocks" which are 4 x 2 x 1/2 inches thick are also available.
The density of the pads are rated 0.80 gm/c3, while the blocks are slightly less dense and rated at 0,70 gm/c3. The 1/2 inch thick blocks are ideal for deburring by cutting into the block and drawing the knife edge through while the pads are best used with a stropping motion. Both methods are highly effective and make removing burrs a quick and simple task.
In the photo below, the
8 x 3 x 1/8th inch felt pad is shown on the left and the
12 x 3 x 1/4 inch rock hard felt pad is shown on the right. These can be ordered with or without magnetic backing.
Aside from stropping on the pads (shown above), some sharpeners like to cut into the
edge of rock hard felt and draw the knife through to remove
burrs. Although this can be done with pads of either thickness, 1/2 inch
thick rock hard felt blocks are ideal for this due to their added thickness.

If ordered without magnetic backing these felt stropping pads could
either be glued to a piece of wood or simply placed against any flat surface
and used as is. The advantage of ordering the rock hard felt without
magnetic backing and not gluing it to a base is that both sides are
then available to strop on. On the other hand, if you have a suitable metal base, having magnetic backing is very convenient.
