Oversize Leather Strops (Currently Out of Stock)
I had trouble finding a strop that was large enough to take nice long strokes so I decided to make some extra large board mounted strops of my own to make stropping easier and more efficient.  These are great for all knives or any sharp edges but are especially nice for large kitchen knives.  I've been using one like this myself for quite a while now.  I'm so pleased with the way the extra length and width works that I decided to make these available for order on a limited basis.

The strops pictured on this page are 16 inches long by ~3-1/2 inches wide by ~3/4 inches high.  (Note: All measurements quoted are accurate to + or -  ~1/4 inch due to variable amounts of sanding required.)  Very high quality leather personally selected by me that is ideal for stropping has been glue mounted to a sealed Poplar wood board (although unsealed fir is pictured above.)   One of the important characteristics of the leather I use is that it is very firm and not too thick so it has little or no "give" to it.  This is important so the leather will not curl around your edges and cause rounding of the edges.

Since the photos shown above were taken, I have implemented some design changes that, in my opinion, greatly improve the looks, performance and durability of these strops.  Unless another wood is requested, I'm now using furniture grade clear white Poplar for the bases and all wood surfaces are sealed with at least 4 coats of a clear semi gloss outdoor spar varathane type sealer before the leather is glue mounted to the wood base.  The sealer makes the wood more attractive, and more importantly, water resistant and less likely to warp if/when the leather is ever cleaned with a water based cleaner.  I think these additional steps greatly enhance the quality, longevity, appearance and feel (as one touches the wood) of these strops.

Also, before and after applying the several coats of the sealer and before mounting the leather, the bases are carefully flattened on both the top and bottom using sandpaper (up to 600 grit) mounted on a granite reference plate to assure that both the tops and bottoms of the bases are as flat as possible before the leather is applied.

In addition, as of late April, 2010, I've been using a very special and costly grade of leather on these strops that is even better than what I used previously.  The new leather is slightly thicker than that pictured above and therefore is more durable.  But it still is very firm with no increased "give" so there is no increased propensity to round edges.  The next photo below shows the "new" very high quality leather mounted on one of the sealed Poplar bases I'm currently offering.  I'm finding the new leather noticeably improves my edges even without loading it with any additional abrasive.  (But I still recommend loading the leather with your preferred abrasive.)

The next three photos show sealed Pine bases with the thinner leather I'm no longer using for these wood mounted strops:

In the photos below, you can see the grain or pores of the leather which allow the leather to become embedded with abrasive.  I think that leather like this is ideal for stropping after an appropriate abrasive has been applied and becomes embedded in the pores of the leather.

And here (below) is an extreme close up of the same leather magnified many times (not sure exactly how many though).  You can really see why this leather is so effective at trapping and holding on to very fine strop abrasive.

I can make strops sized like the ones pictured here (~16" x ~3-1/2" x ~3/4" which is the size I recommend for kitchen knives) for $35 plus shipping for the sealed, flattened, Poplar version with the highest quality leather.  The exact price depends on the wood used and the size you order.   Currently Out of Stock

Pre-load option
:  At your request, (and while my non personal supply of Adams #2 lasts), I can ship these strops pre-loaded with Adams #2 Metal Polish, which makes an outstanding strop abrasive, for an additional $3.50 per side.

(Just FYI:  USPS Priority Mail shipping within the U.S. is currently usually running around $10 to $12 for one or two of these strops.  Unfortunately, they don't fit in any of the cheaper flat rate boxes.  If you email me your shipping address and details regarding what you are interested in, I will gladly provide your with an exact no obligation quote for your items and the shipping cost and details on how you can pay via PayPal.)

A double sided version (i.e., with leather mounted on both sides) is also available for $59 plus shipping.

I also can make magnetic backed strops made with this very special leather in various sizes.  Exact price will depend on the size but to give you an idea, a 11 x 3 inch piece of premium stropping leather with magnetic backing would be $28 plus shipping.

Custom order requests are welcome and will gladly be considered.

If you are interested in ordering one of these strops or something else related to strops, please feel free to email me with any questions and to discuss your specific requirements and obtain a no obligation quote.

"Re:  Thank You!

Wow, Peter, the workmanship and materials in the strop are simply impeccable, and it quickly brought the edge of my Tadatsuna knives back to a brilliant mirror.  Hope I used it right--I'll check YouTube to see if some good examples of stropping exist . . . .

Thanks again,"

"Hi Peter,

I got your beautiful strop yesterday in the mail after being out of town for a week. I have a question: I just ordered a 6 oz. "green stick" (mainly chromium oxide) from Lee Valley Tools in New York. Could you email me a quick & dirty procedure for doctoring your already superb strop? In other words, how do I apply this stuff to the strop & how often?

Many thanks,
Best,"

“Hi,

Strop and Wa wax came yesterday and they're great. I'd like to order one more strop, uncharged in this case.  As a reminder, I am . . . [personal identifying info removed.]  Thanks."

Hey Peter,

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I got your strop and I love it. The larger size took no time to adjust to and it works even better for my larger knives than my old strop. The strop looks and feels well put-together and the leather is just great. Now I just have to stay focused stropping and not gouge this beauty =P."

"Peter, your strop is still the awesomest EVAR [sic].  I use it on everything at home, but of course it's too big for travel or daily carry. I've discovered that a wooden tongue depressor impregnated with Adam's #2 works surprisingly well as a field-expedient strop. I also always have one of these on my person."

"I just got my 16 inch strop from Peter of sharper-knives.com.  It took a while, but it wasn't Peter's fault.  The mail system in my country [Philippines] really sucks.  The package spent a month in transit and another month in processing.

Best strop I have ever used.  The firmness and porosity of the leather, the great feel and size of the strop all contribute to making it so easy to get the most crisp edge possible.  Ever since I first reviewed Adam's #2 [Metal Polish], I've been raving about how it creates literally (free-hanging!) hair-slitting (on a push cut!) edges.  Peter's strop combined with #2 just makes it effortless."
